In today’s LA Times, August Brown talks to percussionist/composer Joachim Cooder about training to be a chef, leading a band for the first time, and what it means to take your own path when your dad is a famous musician.
About Cooder’s debut album, Brown writes, “[‘Love on a Real Train’] will upend many of the expectations placed on an heir to L.A. blues-rock…. Though it runs a sonic gauntlet from Tahitian choir snippets on "Strike Up Your Matches" with [Matt] Costa, to R&B by way of the Postal Service on [Robert] Francis' "Come Home" and the ambient tone-poem of [Jon] Hassell's "Shinkansen," Cooder's sure compositional hand keeps the record coherent, with a particularly L.A. melancholy.”

Featuring Frank Lyon of Brooklyn band Keepaway, the video was filmed entirely on an iPhone, at a Brooklyn wedding where Lyon didn’t know anyone, and no one knew he was being filmed.
